The Orange Peel Quilt Block is a classic block. They first appeared in published material in the 1800s and are also referred to as Lemon Peel, Melon Peel and Lafayette Orange Peel.

Use the template to cut fabric and fusible lightweight interfacing shapes* Save time by cutting multiple layers at once.

Sew a ¼" seam allowance around the block with the right side of the fabric and the fusible (bubbly) side of the interfacing together.

Notch the seam allowance around the curves being careful not to snip into your stitches.
*Notching convex curves (and clipping concave curves) helps your seams lie flat. I like to use pinking shears (quick and easy).

Carefully snip a slit in the middle of the interfacing only.

Turn your block right side out and use your fingers or a point turner to smooth the edges and form the perfect shape.

Fuse and Applique the leaf shape to your block using hand or machine applique.

*The interfacing does add an extra layer to your quilt. This can add dimension and texture. If you prefer trim away excess fusible before appliqueing.
You could use water soluble backing or omit the interfacing and use needle turn applique if you prefer.

Applique your leaf shape onto the middle of a 9" square background fabric or sew together 12½" squares and applique the leaf shape centred over and covering the seam.

Helpful Notions:

Lightweight Fusible Interfacing such as Pellon 911FF

Point-to-point turning tool to help make the perfect leaf shape easily

12½" square ruler or a 9½" square ruler to cut your background fabrics

Pinking Shears are great for reducing bulk and shaping curved blocks (I prefer them to pinking rotary cutter blades)

Needles for piecing. Choose needles to suit your thread.

Thread for Applique to stitch your orange peels onto your background blocks.
I like Monopoly thread or Invisafil thread for Invisible machine applique. Silk 100wt or fine cotton thread like Aurifil 80wt or Efina 60wt cotton for unseen hand applique.
You can also use 12wt and even Eleganza perle cotton threads if you prefer your stitches to be seen, bold and decorative.
