An excerpt:Why do we applique? to make wonderful quilts, of course! One of the best aspects of applique is that any design that can be drawn, can be appliqued. Houses, people, dogs, cats, cars, dinosaurs - you can applique whatever interests you. Perhaps the most common applique designs are flowers. Whether they are simple or complex, flowers are all over appliqued quilts.
So, couldn't you piece a floral design? Well, yes and no. When an image is pieced into a quilt, it is usually broken up into small bits with straight sides, with many bits of fabric pieced together like a mosaic. This can be both lovely and amazing. However, images produced this way lack the fluid line that is possible with applique.
Why do we prefer hand applique The truest answer is that we enjoy handwork. As a matter of fact, we more than enjoy it - we love it! With stitching in hand, we are calmer, happier, and more able to deal with the stresses around us. It's better than therapy!
Do you think that it must take a lot of patience to do hand applique Honestly, we are the least patient people we know. In fact, hand applique is for people who cannot sit still! Hand applique is portable. You can stitch almost anywhere - waiting at the doctor's office, during breaks at work, riding (not driving!) in the car. We're always ready to sew.
Do you really want to spend time watching TV when you could be spending that time stitching? Why not listen to the TV or music while you stitch? It won't be long before you have a quilt to show for your time.
The New Appliqué Sampler is our third book of hand applique techniques. Each book is better and more complete than the last. Our techniques have not changed significantly over the years, but when we find a better way to do something, we like to share it. The more we write, the better our instructions become.
May you have many hours of happy stitching!
