Rotary Rulers
Acrylic see-through rulers are used to measure strips for cutting. Look for rulers with very thin line markings, because narrow lines make it easier to align the edge of the fabric exactly at a line instead of guessing where the fabric edge is positioned under a thick mark. The result is more accurate strips.
If you are just starting out then begin with a few basic rulers and add to your collection as you discover what works best for you:
- A 6.5" x 24" or 6" x 24" rotary ruler will be your workhorse and will enable you to make nearly any type of cut. Check that 30, 45, and 60-degree lines are marked and dimensions are in 1/8" increments.
- A 6.5" x 6.5" square ruler is perfect for aligning and cutting squares and triangle squares. Dimensions are duplicated along two adjoining sides, with a diagonal guideline running through them.
- A 12.5" x 12.5" square ruler helps you make sure blocks are square. You'll find lots of other uses for it.
